World GIS Day (Geographical Information System day) is celebrated around the world every year during the month of November as a part of National Geographic’s & Geographical awareness week. More information and material can be found at . GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is the mapping of Geographic information with the assistance of computer technology.


In view of World GIS Day, GIS Solutions (Private) Limited the sole authorized Sri Lankan distributor of Environmental System Research Institute (ESRI), and Survey Department of Sri Lanka have jointly organized a competition of mapping significant places in the surrounding environment through GIS technology, under the theme of One Map Sri Lanka – Edition 04”. This is the fourth consecutive year that this competition is being carried out.

 School & University Students Mapping Competition 

Students of any age could participate in the competition. They could send us an entry by uploading a digital Picture and information of a geographically or culturally or economically and/or socially important or significant place/location, from their surroundings, its Longitude and Latitude coordinates and a small description about it including interesting facts, along with their own details. Participation will be through on-line submissions method only this year. All interested participants click below submit button on or before 31st October 2020 and submit their entries.


GIS User Mapping Competition

Those who are wish to participate in the competition, could upload information of a geographically, culturally, economically and socially important or significant place/ location/s from their own surroundings.



Certificates and a special award will be bestowed to selected entries by a special panel of judges. Award ceremony details & winner details will be informed in due course to the winners.

Our main intention is to instill the habit of using Maps and Mapping technology by creating a complete map of significant and unique of important places of Sri Lanka utilizing GIS and GPS technology.  This activity would help the students to understand the fundamental of GIS (observe, study, analyze the places unique to Sri Lanka).
